The Chicago's police department is ramping up its crackdown on impaired drivers this weekend, as a DUI Saturation Patrol is set to roll out in 9th District from Friday evening through early Saturday morning. Officials have announced the patrol will commence at 6:00 p.m. on January 5, 2024, and will continue until 2:00 a.m. on January 6, targeting erratic drivers, speedsters, and seat belt slackers alike.
According to a statement from the Chicago Police Department, the purpose of this operation is to flood the designated area with roaming officers on the lookout for signs of impaired driving, but they will not be neglecting other violations, such as excessive speed, seat belt, and alcohol-related infractions. Equipped with speed detection gear and accompanied by the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit, these patrols have the tools to promptly process DUI offenses and issue I-Bonds on the spot.
Reflecting on a similar patrol conducted in the 3rd (Grand Crossing) District last month, the results might seem somewhat reassuring with no DUI arrests made. However, the previous patrol yielded 15 unsafe vehicle violations, six insurance violations, two seat belt violations, a revoked license, a driver's license violation, six speed violations, a distracted driving citation, and eight other miscellaneous traffic violations for a grand total of 40 citations, all without a single car being towed.
The police are sending a clear message to all who take the wheel this weekend: driving under the influence is an unacceptable risk, and a net of vigilance awaits those who flout the law, the stakes are high, not just for reckless drivers, but for anyone who takes the road lightly.
