Residents of Chicago's 17th District have been put on high alert after a string of thefts targeting power tools from vehicles, particularly cargo/work vans. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert following the incidents that occurred over two days, with the thieves seemingly pinpointing work-related equipment. This series of thefts has rattled local workers and businesses that depend on such tools for their daily operations.
According to the information released by the Chicago Police Department on their website, the offenders carried out the thefts using a white SUV to quickly break into work vans and swiftly take off with the valuable equipment. The crimes took place between January 25th and 26th, 2024, with reports of incidents spanning several blocks within the district.
Details provided by the police pinpoint the times and locations of these thefts, showing a pattern of predawn strikes, with the first incident reported in the 4700 block of North Kenneth Ave. These crimes continued through the early morning hours across the North Side of Chicago, with the latest theft noted at about 5:50 a.m. in the 4500 block of North Avers Ave. The suspects, described as two male Hispanics, seem to have executed a concentrated blitz, hitting multiple vans within hours of one another.
Adding to the public announcement, Chicago police have advised locals not to directly confront the offenders and have called on them to remain vigilant. Residents are encouraged to watch for suspicious activity and to ensure their vehicles are as secure as possible, including checking that surveillance cameras are functional. The alert emphasizes the importance of calling 911 immediately to report any incidents or suspicious behavior and specifically requests that detailed descriptions of the offenders and their vehicles, including license plate information, be relayed to law enforcement.
