Tragedy struck the heart of Chicago's Loop as two teenage students, Robert Boston, 16, and Monterio Williams, 17, from Innovations High School were fatally shot in broad daylight. The school announced it would remain closed on Monday to mourn the loss, according to a statement on its website signed by Principal Alicia Shines. "It is with profound sadness and deep sorrow that we come together to mourn the devastating loss of two of our students, who were tragically shot and killed while being dismissed for the weekend," Shines said, in an announcement reported by NBC Chicago.
As the students exited the school located on North State Street, they were ambushed near the corner of Madison Street and Wabash Avenue, in an unexpected eruption of violence during their walkout on Friday just before 12:30 p.m. "Something like a firecracker, like 10, 15 shots," a witness, Mohammad Ashiq, described the chaos that followed to WGN-TV.
Despite the swift response from emergency services that transported both teens to an area hospital in critical condition where they succumbed to their injuries, the community is left grappling with the senselessness of the event. "We appreciate the outpouring of support as our school grapples with this senseless act of violence," echoed Shines in a message permeated by grief while contemplating what might have been for the two students with futures cut tragically short.
Masked gunmen fired from two vehicles, according to police, who are now rigorously searching for suspects. A darker-colored SUV was mentioned in police briefings, with officials combing through area surveillance footage in hopes of tracking down the assailants. Amid these efforts, police have yet to posit a clear motive for the shootings but have urged the public to aid the investigation by contacting Chicago police with any viable leads.
Mayor Brandon Johnson stressed the whole city's heartbreak over the incident, stating, "It's a tragedy no matter where it happens," in a statement obtained by NBC Chicago.
