Small businesses in Chicago's Grand Crossing neighborhood are on high alert after a string of burglaries left owners rattled and police scouring for leads. According to a recent police report, multiple businesses in the 3rd District have been hit by burglaries since December, with perpetrators employing forceful tactics like prying open doors or cutting locks to carry out their thefts.
The crimes occurred under cover of darkness or in the early morning hours, with incidents reported on the 500 block of E. 61st St. on December 18-19, on the 0-100 block of E. 71st St., and the 400 block of E. 71st St. on December 19, 2023, and most recently occurring once more on the 400 block of E. 61st St. on January 4, 2024, authorities have yet to nab any suspects in the burglaries which they say occurred between 3 p.m. and 8 a.m., respectively, for the December dates and in the early hours for the January incident.
With no concrete descriptions of the offenders, law enforcement officials are left with scant clues beyond the vehicles believed to be involved: a gray/black Kia Soul and a white sedan.
Chicago Police have issued guidance in response to the break-ins, urging business owners to keep their properties well-lit and secure all potential entry points, while encouraging the prompt reporting of any suspicious activities locating the perpetrators is a community effort and each vigilant pair of eyes grants the force a greater chance of apprehending the criminals. The police are also advising those affected to retain any video evidence and to avoid contaminating crime scenes, in a concerted effort to foster environments uninviting to theft and secure from incursion.
