A snowstorm caused a 'tear' on the Green Garden Golf Dome in Frankfort, a popular golfing spot in the Chicago suburbs. The structure gave way on Friday afternoon during a particularly punishing winter storm, which dumped several inches of snow across the region. According to NBC Chicago, Frankfort's Fire Chief Sean Fierce reported that a combination of rain, snow, and wind caused the indoor driving range's balloon dome to begin to slump, before a light pole pierced the roof, popping it like a balloon.
While the dome quickly deflated, no injuries were reported, making the outcome far less grim than it might have been. The incident however has left the site unusable for the foreseeable future, rendering the damage severe with clean-up and restoration efforts yet to be fully assessed, reported CBS.
This collapse serves as a chilly echo of the city's historical struggle with winter's wrath, harkening back to an infamous Chicago blizzard 45 years ago, noted CBS. In January 1979, Lakeshore Racquet Club's roof succumbed under a snow pile-up, much like today's golf dome disaster.
