Fear grips Chicago's Northwest Side communities after a string of daylight armed robberies rattles residents. A blue Kia sedan is at the center of a police manhunt following a spree of five armed robberies which occurred within less than an hour on Sunday morning, CBS Chicago reported. The suspects, donning dark masks and clothes, wielded handguns with laser sights, and struck at least one victim with a pistol.
The robberies unfolded across the Hermosa and Belmont Cragin neighborhoods, starting at the 2000 North Block of Karlov Ave at 06:10 a.m. and continuing through the 4400 West Block of Armitage Ave at 06:20 a.m., 2700 North Block of Central Ave at 06:45 a.m., 2800 North Block of Central Ave at 06:46, a.m., and finally, the 2000 North Block of Laramie Ave at 06:55 a.m. Police, left with only vague descriptions of the assailants, urge any witnesses or persons with knowledge of the incidents to contact Area 5 detectives at 312-746-7394.
A meeting focusing on the surge in criminal activity convened on Saturday at the Logan Square branch of the Chicago Public Library. This assembly, led by the 14th District Community Committee for Public Safety and Policing Initiatives, pointed to a disconcerting rise in robberies and auto thefts despite a reduction in homicides and shootings, WGN-TV Chicago reported.
"Motor vehicle theft up 61% in one year and 264% in three years," Adam Burck, Chairman of the 14th District Community Committee, underscored the troubling spike. "Robberies are up 45% in our district in just one year, and 138% in two years," he added, delineating the gravity of the situation. Burck also emphasized the importance of resident involvement, saying "Get active in your community, find your local CCPSA, they meet monthly, usually in a public space and you learn a lot more." The committee is scheduled for a follow-up meeting in February with the 14th district police commander to maintain the dialog and bolster community engagement in crime prevention.
The rapid succession of thefts underscores a broader narrative of rising vehicular crimes and personal robberies tormenting the neighborhoods, coopcing citizens and local leaders alike to grapple with a potent sense of vulnerability and a profound desire for peace and safety.
