The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has hit a major milestone in its post-pandemic recovery, reporting a surge in ridership numbers that eclipsed any seen since the outbreak began. According to data released by CTA, the agency provided a whopping 279 million train and bus rides throughout 2023, which marks an uptick of more than 14 percent compared to the previous year.
In hard numbers, the CTA is talking nearly 36 million more rides in 2023 over the prior year. Bus rides have specifically seen to increase by 15.5 percent in 2023 relative to 2022, a significant jump. Even rail usage isn't far behind, with a 13.4 percent escalation in ridership. Adding to these impressive figures, there were 27 days where the CTA registered over 1 million rides in a single day—a stat that stands to showcase a city back in motion.
"The growth we saw last year was substantial, pointing to an encouraging trend that we anticipate to not only continue but also to build upon in 2024," said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr., in a statement hailed by transit enthusiasts. The CTA isn't resting on its laurels, though, with an ambitious target to train 200 rail operators this year to cater to the expected demand.
According to the CTA, in the darkest days of April 2020, ridership had plummeted to 20 percent of its pre-pandemic levels. But with 2023's figures, service has now rebounded to just over 60 percent of what it used to be before the health crisis began. With the uptick in use, the CTA is to continue improving its services and meeting the transit needs of Chicago's residents, signifying the city's resolve to adapt and forge ahead amidst ongoing challenges.
