A 48-year-old sailor and his loyal canine companion, stranded off San Diego's Zuniga Jetty, were saved in a daring rescue by the Coast Guard on Monday morning. The mariner, facing hostile weather conditions and crippled by a lack of crucial equipment including an onboard radio and propulsion—and with his cell phone's battery on its last breath—had the foresight to call the Joint Harbor Operations Center for help, a move that likely saved him and his furry friend from the storm's impending wrath.
As the tempest raged on, Coast Guard Sector San Diego responded with valor, dispatching a Response Boat-medium crew from Coast Guard Station San Diego to the imperiled vessel, however upon arrival, the crew faced another challenge; the 30-foot sailboat was without tow points, which complicated the rescue operation further still, the harrowing seas thwarted the efforts at first.
In an action marked by urgency and determination, the Coast Guard team managed to safely evacuate both the mariner and his pooch from their precarious predicament, according to the U.S. Coast Guard official press release. Both were then transported to Shelter Island, a sanctuary from the chaos that had moments ago threatened to engulf them.
Remarkably, neither the man nor his four-legged buddy sustained any injuries during the ordeal, testament mayhap to the swift and effective response of the Coast Guard.
