Coon Rapids' outdoor ice rinks are finally open for locals looking to lace up their skates starting on January 12 at 5:00 p.m., just in time for holiday revelers to make the most of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.
Weather hiccups had initially put a freeze on the beloved winter pastime, with balmy December days and an elusive deep frost to blame. The city has been waiting to quickly lay down and properly freeze the rinks as temperatures dipped to acceptable levels, according to an announcement from the City of Coon Rapids.
The cold snap finally gave the green light for the seasonal skating spots, offering residents the perfect locale for some winter fun. For those looking to take a break from the chill, warming houses will be available with special hours throughout the long weekend: 5-9 p.m. on Friday, 1-9 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
Rink maintenance is scheduled to daily ensure safe and smooth ice conditions, with crews shaving, sweeping, and flooding the rinks as Mother Nature permits. Although warming houses have limited hours, the outdoor rinks are open for toe loops and hockey stops from dawn to late evening, 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., during normal park operating times, details the City of Coon Rapids.
