A high-speed chase and a coordinated effort between Brentwood and Richmond police departments led to the arrest of an organized retail thief who had been targeting Kohl's department stores across Contra Costa County. The pursuit began on Tuesday when Brentwood officers responded to a theft report at a local Kohl's, whereupon arrival an officer spotted two suspects entering a car previously pegged for multiple theft incidents.
The suspect's getaway car was observed fleeing the scene at a dangerous pace, catching the officer's attention due to its involvement in a string of thefts reportedly totaling upwards of $20,000. In an effort to apprehend the culprits, Dispatch put out an alert to neighboring agencies with information about the suspects and the car.
About an hour later, according to a post on the Brentwood Police Department's Facebook page, Richmond PD located the vehicle and detained 25-year-old Maya Usher of Antioch. Usher was soon confirmed to be one of the individuals behind the Kohl's thefts.
Further investigation linked Usher to "thousands of dollars worth" of stolen merchandise from Kohl's stores within and outside the county lines. Subsequently, Usher faced multiple charges, including organized retail theft and evading police. The Brentwood Police Department expressed gratitude to the Richmond PD for their aid in this ongoing investigation, which seeks to bring any additional perpetrators to justice.
