CVS to Close Downtown Boston Store on Summer Street in National Streamlining EffortSource: Google Street View

People who often visit the CVS Pharmacy located at 55 Summer St. in downtown Boston will soon have to look for an alternative place to purchase their healthcare essentials. CVS has confirmed that this location will shut its doors for good on February 7th, as a part of a larger strategy to shutter 900 stores nationwide over the next three years.

The call to close this particular pharmacy was influenced by a variety of considerations, such as changes in the surrounding community, competition among local CVS stores, and other market forces. A CVS spokesperson said in a statement obtained by WBZ-TV that the company made "the difficult business decision" to close the Summer St. location. It was one of 21 in Boston, CVS said, and the company will continue to have a robust presence in the city post-closure.

CVS Pharmacy will be transferred to 333 Washington St. Employees of the Summer St. store won't have to worry about losing their jobs, as they have been guaranteed the opportunity to transfer to other CVS locations. "Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions," CVS said.

The broader scheme includes boosting health service offerings, despite the reduction in store count, according to BNN Breaking.

After closing its doors at 55 Summer St., CVS will continue to operate its remaining 21 locations in and around Boston.
