Dallas Animal Services (DAS) volunteers stepped up in a big way last year, helping the organization navigate through some rough patches and contributing to the well-being of numerous homeless pets. The dedicated crew played a vital role in tackling challenges like the Canine Influenza outbreak and overcapacity issues, alongside IT outages that threatened operations, according to the City of Dallas.
Despite these hurdles, the volunteers made a significant impact, especially in the area of offsite events which saw an "astronomical jump" in participation. Hours logged for such events skyrocketed from 163 in 2022 to over 1,800 in 2023. A Dallas Animal Services representative highlighted the importance of this effort, stating, "the true impact of how many people ended up fostering, adopting, or volunteering after seeing us at an offsite event is immeasurable." In addition to building community connections, these efforts have greatly assisted in promoting adoptions and fostering of the animals, as per the City of Dallas.
Marketing initiatives also saw a boost, with over 2,300 volunteer hours dedicated last year, a marked increase from around 1,300 hours the previous year. The work involved writing pet bios, photographing animals, and sharing on social media, all vital in finding new homes for the creatures under DAS care. "You have made a world of difference in finding homes for pets," the DAS statement read, expressing gratitude to the volunteers who have gone above and beyond to aid in these marketing efforts, per the City of Dallas.
Volunteers dedicated substantial time in other areas as well, such as providing over 4,000 hours of dog-related opportunities and over 550 hours for cat-related efforts. The DAS newsletter thanked volunteers for the gamut of activities they engage in, from the “Home Again Heroes” program, which assists in reuniting lost pets with their owners, to long-distance rescue rides and running a pet food pantry that helps keep pets out of shelters. The organization's appreciation was clear: "You make a world of difference for both the staff and the pets in our care", as cited by the City of Dallas.
For those looking to support DAS or join the volunteer efforts, the organization has various opportunities available. They are seeking help with their Rescue Assistant Opportunity, calling for volunteers to aid in creating content that tells "a more complete story about our pets." Prospective volunteers are encouraged to email DAS at [email protected] to set up an interview. Additionally, the Canine Adoption Assistant role awaits those who find joy in helping dogs find new homes. To offer support for the pet food pantry, individuals can donate through the Cuddly or Amazon Wishlist. Furthermore, the popular 'Daycations' program is now open every day except Monday for those volunteers interested, per the City of Dallas.
