In a strategic move to bolster their roster, the Dallas Cowboys brought back two familiar faces on Thursday, adding offensive lineman La'el Collins and linebacker Damien Wilson to their practice squad. Both players haven't set foot on the gridiron in 2023, but they're now poised to quickly shift back into gear with their former team, according to FOX 4 News.
The Cowboys released receiver Martavis Bryant and three other players to clear space for these new additions. Bryant, who has been suspended three times for substance abuse violations, ended his five-year NFL hiatus when he signed with Dallas in November. However, he didn't play a game during his short stint and the Cowboys have signaled an interest in a potential reunion next season.
The return of Collins, who first played six seasons for Dallas, comes at a critical moment with left guard Tyler Smith and left tackle Tyron Smith grappling with injuries. Collins' initial tenure with the Cowboys ended on a turbulent note, as he faced a five-game suspension over substance abuse violations and ensuing legal disputes with the league. After Dallas released him, he spent one season with the Cincinnati Bengals before making his way back.
On defense, Damien Wilson's re-signing adds depth to the linebacker core. His initial run with the team spanned four seasons after being drafted in the fourth round by the Cowboys in 2015. Since then, he's made rounds across the league, with stints at Kansas City, Jacksonville, and Carolina, as shared by USA Today.
Additionally, the Cowboys signed two younger talents receiver Racey McMath and running back SaRodorick Thompson, to inject some fresh energy into the offense. Thompson, a local from the Dallas area, hopes to make a splash after spending most of his rookie season on Seattle's practice squad. The players released to make room for these moves include receiver Tyron Billy-Johnson, guard Adam Pankey, and defensive tackle Willington Previlon.
