A Dallas community is reeling after a 6-year-old girl was fatally shot in a residence on the 2100 block of North Fitzhugh Avenue, authorities say. According to the Dallas Police Department, officers responded to the shooting call on January 10, at approximately 2:40 p.m. and found the young victim with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The, preliminary investigation revealed that the handgun that caused the girl's death had been left unsecured in the townhome where the shooting occurred. At the time, two other juveniles and two adults were inside. Dallas Police have yet to determine the exact circumstances under which the child was shot.
As the investigation unfolds, Damariya Sowels, 19, has been taken into custody. Sowels faces charges of Tampering with Physical Evidence along with other unrelated warrants. The case, documented under number 005344-2024, is still active as detectives continue their search for answers in this devastating incident.
While details about how the child came into contact with the firearm remain unclear, this incident serves as a grim reminder about the dangers of unsecured weapons in homes with children. The Dallas Police urge residents to keep firearms locked away and out of reach from children to prevent such tragedies, in the future. The investigation into this incident is still developing, and more information will be shared as it becomes available.
