In a preemptive strike against the impending chill, the City of Dallas is opening its doors to the homeless, providing a respite from the frigid embrace of Mother Nature. The Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) has declared the Fair Park Grand Place as the Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TIWS). Officials have marked 3701 Grand Ave. as the primary refuge starting Friday, Jan. 12, according to the City of Dallas.
Teaming up with the Austin Street Center, Dallas is tackling the harsh winter head-on, with shelter operations kicking off at 3 p.m. To 10 p.m. on the initial day, and extending from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. thereafter. As long as the weather’s bite persists, based on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric forecast. The initiative reflects the city's commitment to "a safe and warm environment" for its street dwellers, Deputy City Manager Kimberly Tolbert remarked in an interview, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across nonprofit sectors, as per the City of Dallas.
“Inclement Weather Shelters are a priority for the City of Dallas. They provide a safe and warm environment for our unsheltered neighbors, giving them access to food and water and an opportunity to connect with organizations that can provide short and long-term supportive housing,” Tolbert stated, per the City of Dallas.
Representatives from the Austin Street Center expressed their gratitude and support for the city's efforts. "Too often, we talk about what isn’t working – but this collaborative effort has been an effective partnership that saves lives every year," declared Daniel Roby, Chief Executive Officer of Austin Street Center. The sentiment was echoed by OHS Director Christine Crossley, who lauded the opening of the TIWS site. At the same time, Stacey Church, General Manager of Fair Park, reaffirmed the venue's role in community support, as cited by the City of Dallas.
The city is not only providing a fixed sanctuary but also advising those experiencing homelessness to visit existing overnight shelter providers. For individuals reluctant about the shelters, Dallas distributes cold weather packs across recreational centers and through the OHS. Volunteering and donation information are available on the Dallas Homeless Solutions website for those looking to support the cause.
