The Denton Wildland Firefighters, teaming up with Parks personnel, will torch a 22-acre section of the northern wildflower loop in North Lakes Park for training and research purposes. Trails on the north side are off-limits during the burn but the rest of the park's attractions will still be buzzing with activity.
The action is set to kick off around noon on January 31 and is expected to wrap up around three in the afternoon, but the smoke might linger a little longer. Visitors can anticipate signs indicating "Fire Training Ahead" and "Trail Closed" to keep everyone safe and informed, according to the Denton Police Department.
But this isn't just a regular training exercise. The city's public safety drone team sees it as an opportunity to sharpen their skills, hovering above to ensure fire personnel's safety and to make sure onlookers maintain a safe distance. The Denton Parks and Rec team also stands to gain valuable land management insights from the proceedings.
Fire and Parks personnel are staying on the scene until the dark smoke has cleared, giving peace of mind that everything is under control. By the time the park reopens in full on Thursday, nature's resilience will soon paint the burnt earth with a vibrant palette of spring wildflowers—a fact city officials are keen to remind us of.
