Chaos unfolded on the downtown connector earlier today as a series of crashes, including one involving a police officer and another fatal collision, disrupted Atlanta traffic, authorities said. The Atlanta Police Department confirmed that an officer was involved in a crash on Interstate 75/85 northbound in downtown Atlanta around 7:11 a.m. The incident, which also involved a Nissan Altima, left the civilian driver injured and brought traffic to a standstill with three lanes blocked while emergency crews attended the scene, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported. An ambulance was dispatched for the injured driver while the officer did not report any injuries.
The traffic woes began earlier with an incident around 5:30 a.m. when a pedestrian was struck and killed near the University Ave exit on the same interstate. The victim, pronounced dead at the scene, has yet to be identified. Police shut down the northbound lanes to investigate the accident, which was eventually cleared by 9:15 a.m., as per Channel 2 Action News. Following the clearance, drivers were advised to seek alternative routes with suggestions to use Interstate 285, Hwy 41, or Hwy 29 to avoid persistent delays.
In the wake of these incidents, multi-car crashes continued to plague the downtown connector. "Triple Team Traffic’s" Mike Shields of Channel 2 Action News reported additional blockages near 17th Street. The disruptions rippled throughout the city's already congested traffic arteries, with commuters scrambling to find alternate paths to their destinations. Despite the concurrent accidents, by mid-morning, all lanes were reopened to traffic.
