
A driver is in critical condition after his vehicle took a plunge into a Fort Lauderdale canal this afternoon. The Fort Lauderdale Police informed that the man was driving along the 5100 block of Northwest 33rd Avenue, when the vehicle veered off the road and became fully submerged in the canal around 12:15 p.m. Officers and fire rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they successfully extricated the driver from the drowned car.
Details obtained by NBC Miami report the driver was given CPR before being urgently transported to Florida Medical Center. Police officials have yet to release the identity of the individual, who remains in critical condition. During the rescue efforts, two officers also sustained minor injuries. All efforts are now being made to swiftly investigate the cause of the incident.
Meanwhile, footage from 7Skyforce showcased the car submerged beneath the canal's murky waters, highlighting the severity of the situation as police and fire rescue units worked to save the driver's life. WSVN didn't disclose the current condition of the driver, aside from the fact that he was hospitalized following the rescue.
One officer was also transported to the hospital as a precaution after they had to quickly jump into the water to assist the driver, according to WSVN.
