An East Longmeadow man has been hit with a six-month prison stint for running a large-scale marijuana trafficking operation. John Americo Pereira, 38, was sentenced in federal court in Springfield, also receiving three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to drug distribution charges in June 2023.

Authorities began sniffing around Pereira's business in January 2018, eventually raiding his home in February 2019 where they discovered a whopping $688,000 in cash, alongside a hefty 269 pounds of marijuana, ready for sale – not to mention a large stash of edibles, including 876 chocolate bars laced with the substance, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The operation to take down Pereira was a joint effort, with the Feds teaming up with Massachusetts State Police and Homeland Security Investigations to close the net on the trafficker. U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni handed down the sentence, bringing an end to a chapter for the local drug scene in Springfield.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy, took the lead in announcing the sentencing, alongside notable names such as Jodi Cohen of the FBI's Boston Office and Michael J. Krol, of Homeland Security, proving that drug trafficking is taken seriously at all levels of law enforcement. Pereira's case, was clearly a significant one — as indicated by the collective law enforcement muscle flexed during the investigation.
