An elderly woman lost her life in North Providence, Rhode Island, after being struck by an unlicensed snow plow operator. Maria Vega-Rivera, 71, was hit in the parking lot of the Maple Gardens apartments Tuesday afternoon, per the Providence Journal. She suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.
The driver in the fatal incident, 30-year-old Lloyd Card, was found to have been operating the snow plow with a suspended license, and the vehicle itself was not registered. Despite the severity of the event, authorities released Card after he provided a statement, although he now faces multiple motor vehicle violations and potentially additional charges according to WWLP.
North Providence Police Chief Alfredo Ruggiero Jr. confirmed the details of the tragedy to the Providence Journal, adding that the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Card, who had been contracted by the apartment complex for snow removal duties, struck Vega-Rivera as the plow was backing up, according to both The Providence Journal reports.
