A former special education school employee received a 10-year federal prison sentence for his attempt to entice a minor and solicit child pornography. Jon P. Crawford, 45, of Pinckneyville, who once worked as a paraprofessional at the Tri-County Special Education Center in Murphysboro, pleaded guilty to these heinous charges.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the conviction is seen as a stride in the ongoing battle to protect children from sexual predators. U.S. Attorney Rachelle Aud Crowe stated, "Convicting school employees of sex crimes against minors furthers our mission to keep vulnerable children protected from harm." Crowe added that the office will maintain its vigilance in partnering with law enforcement to hold such criminals to account.

The case unfolded after an undercover agent with Homeland Security Investigations posed as a 13-year-old child online in April 2023. Crawford, ensnared by the operation, requested sexually explicit photos and videos from what he believed to be the underage teen, as detailed in court documents.

"Individuals who prey on children, especially those in positions of public trust, should expect to be held fully accountable for their actions," HSI Chicago Special Agent in Charge Sean Fitzgerald, said. He praised the concerted efforts of the prosecutors and agents involved in securing this outcome. The HSI spearheaded the investigation with the assistance of U.S. Attorney Casey Bloodworth, who led the prosecution.

The disturbing case against Crawford was part of the extensive efforts under Project Safe Childhood, an initiative spearheaded by the Department of Justice in May 2006. Dedicated to curbing the troubling rise in child sexual exploitation and abuse, Project Safe Childhood combines the efforts of various governmental levels to efficiently locate and prosecute internet-based exploitation and to rescue the victims ensnared by such criminal activities.
