In Fairfield, California, a routine traffic stop escalated into a felony arrest when cops snagged a man for gun possession – among other charges. Fairfield's Police Department confirmed that 22-year-old Rufus Owens was booked after Officer Spencer pulled over a car with suspended registration on January 11.
With a whiff of burnt marijuana leading the way, officers found themselves peering into a car carrying not just an illegal stash but also an allegedly prohibited firearm. According to the Fairfield PD's social media post, Spencer's routine traffic stop on Sunset Avenue and East Travis revealed more than expired tags. Found in plain view was a blunt, an open baggie of marijuana buds, and, to add to the violation pile, an open and half-empty bottle of liquor.
A further search of the vehicle unearthed a handgun on passenger Owens, who was barred from possessing firearms due to a previous felony conviction. The discovery plunged Owens into deeper legal trouble, solidifying his trip to the Solano County Jail. Fairfield authorities listed the charges, which included "being a felon in possession of a firearm."
