A tragic hit-and-run on Interstate 88 in DuPage County early Sunday morning claimed the life of a pedestrian, authorities said. The Illinois State Police reported that the incident occurred around 8:23 a.m. near Mile Marker 138.5 on the westbound lanes of I-88, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. The victim, after being involved in a prior accident, got out of their vehicle and was subsequently hit by a Jeep that left the scene immediately after the collision.
The driver who had exited their disabled car on the freeway after an earlier crash has yet to be identified by police at this time, the person was left with life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital where they died according to state police, details which were also reflected in coverage by ABC7 Chicago. The state police temporarily closed the right lane of I-88 to carry out their investigation, but it was reopened later on.
The Illinois State Police has not released much detail on the investigation thus far, but they are actively pursuing leads to locate the driver of the Jeep involved in this fatal incident.
