A tragic blaze in Hollywood has claimed the life of one individual earlier today, according to authorities. The call reporting the incident was received around 5:30 a.m. With emergency responders rushing to a residence engulfed in flames on Dewey Street, situated snugly between South 17th Avenue and Federal Highway.
First responders found the fire raging in the rear of the multi-unit dwelling, as CBS Miami reports. The firefighters managed to contain swiftly and then extinguish the fire. However, despite their quick response, one victim was located and promptly transported to Memorial Regional Hospital, where they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin, and it remains unclear if other occupants were inside the ill-fated unit when the fire began. "The fire was isolated to a single unit, fortunately," Hollywood Police Department's Officer Christian Lata expressed in a statement obtained by NBC Miami. One neighbor reportedly revealed that adjacent unit had incurred smoke damage as well.
Investigations are underway to determine what sparked the deadly inferno, with the Hollywood Police Department taking the lead and the state fire marshal also involved in the investigative efforts. "Due to the severity of this incident, the Hollywood Police Department is investigating," continued Officer Lata. The community remains in a state of shock, grappling with the sudden loss as officials scour for answers amidst the charred remnants.
