A routine Tuesday night turned hazardous for a Florida City Police sergeant when a suspected drunk driver collided with his cruiser head-on. According to NBC Miami, the crash occurred after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of 12th Street and North Krome Avenue. The sergeant was responding to an unrelated call, parked on the shoulder, when the silver Honda Civic struck his vehicle.
Officers nearby, avoiding being hit themselves, jumped out of the way as the vehicle careened towards them and the sergeant's cruiser. They were then able to provide assistance to their injured colleague. The sergeant's injuries were non-life-threatening, and he was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center where he remains in stable condition. The 19-year-old male driver of the Honda was detained by police, who suspect alcohol played a role in the crash. Miami-Dade Police Department has taken up the reins of the traffic investigation.

"Other officers on the scene had to jump out of the path of the oncoming vehicle to avoid being struck, and were able to assist the sergeant and detain the other driver who at this time appears to be under the influence," the statement, released by the Florida City police, underscored the harrowing moments following the crash. The significance of the Move Over Law was highlighted in the wake of such incidents, intended to shield both the public servants and the greater public from avoidable tragedies.
