Storming the digital airwaves, two former San Antonio radio personalities, Mike Taylor and Rudy Jay, are diving into the podcast arena with their new show "In The Building." The show, which airs live on YouTube from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily before being uploaded to major platforms such as Spotify and iHeartRadio, will feature a mix of sports discussion, pop culture, and more. Despite their extensive experience in traditional radio, the duo acknowledges they are navigating new terrain with this venture, relying heavily on self-promotion and grassroots marketing, according to an interview with the San Antonio Express-News.
“We have to do what I call guerilla marketing all on our own,” Taylor said, noting their lack of a sales and marketing team. Taylor and Johnson are now in charge of selling sponsorships, managing social media, and making appearances to drum up interest in their show – no easy feat. Johnson, also known as "Rudy Jay," remarked on the broad focus of their show, stating, "San Antonio is not a sports town. It's a family town that likes to have a good time. And that’s what our show will be: a good time," San Antonio Express-News reports.
Debuting the podcast follows Taylor's departure from Ticket 760 last June, where he worked for over a decade and a half. Johnson signed off from San Antonio's Sports Star earlier this month, where he co-hosted the morning show, Barrett Sports Media shared. In addition to their own podcast, the pair envision creating a network called Love You Hard TV, where their show will serve as the flagship. Taylor expressed a desire for ownership, saying, “You don't get rich doing shows. You get rich owning the rights to shows.”
The freedom of podcasting has also allowed for a more relaxed atmosphere as compared to traditional radio, including the ability to swear, though they assure it won't be gratuitous. "Sure we’ll cuss," Taylor said, "But not gratuitously. I’m an old man, and it would look dumb if I do a lot of what I call 'sentence enhancers’," as stated by the San Antonio Express-News . With ambitious goals and a clear vision for the future, Taylor and Jay are betting big on the podcasting wave to carry them to new heights in the digital media landscape.
