Toting guns in carry-ons has brought Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport into the top ten of a list no one wants to lead. Last year, security found more guns in passenger bags here than almost anywhere else in the nation. According to a Miami New Times report, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents discovered 6,737 firearms at 265 airports in 2023, setting a dubious record. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) saw 135 guns intercepted, a figure that placed it ninth overall.
Loaded with potential for disaster, the guns discovered by TSA not only raise alarms but also questions about the reasons travelers insist on flying with such dangerous cargo. As the TSA reels from its busiest year for gun confiscations, TSA Administrator David Pekoske highlighted the issue, saying, "We are still seeing far too many firearms at TSA checkpoints," in a statement released recently. Most concerning for the TSA head is that many of the firearms were loaded, "presenting an unnecessary risk to everyone at the TSA checkpoint."
Leading the pack, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International claimed the unenviable top spot with 451 guns found. Following close, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had agents stopping 378 guns from making it onto flights. Florida's Tampa International Airport also made the list, just edging out Fort Lauderdale for the eighth spot, as per a retweeted post by Naomi Feinstein on X.
