In a shocking incident in Fort Worth, a naked man is accused of beating a delivery driver to death with a piece of firewood, authorities said. The victim, identified as Scotty Jackson, 51, was making deliveries of firewood ahead of an anticipated severe winter storm. The delivery was part of his efforts to provide warmth for families bracing for the cold, according to NBC DFW.
Chrisantus Omondi, 27 is charged with Jackson’s murder, which occurred on Wendover Drive on Saturday night. According to the Tarrant County Corrections Center, Omondi currently remains jailed with a bond set at $300,000. The arrest warrant revealed that the altercation began when the suspect confronted Jackson and a customer during a wood delivery. Jackson was out making last-minute deliveries with the forecast for the week indicating harsh cold weather, and, he was described by his daughter, Kasey De Leon, as a man who wanted “to make sure everybody has firewood, they’re warm, their family’s not cold,” Kasey Deleon said, per NBC DFW.
De Leon, who managed the firewood delivery business with her father, shared her devastation saying that if her father "was his last dollar, he'd give it to you." Recalling his jovial spirit and generosity, she expressed a longing for his presence, “Embarrass me one more time, annoy me one more time. Just bug me,” she said. The family has since set up a GoFundMe page to handle the unexpected funeral expenses, as per WFAA.
The customer referred to as John Doe for privacy, recounted the grim details of the attack. Doe recalled asking Omondi to leave before he turned violent, "As we're loading up the wheelbarrow, this random guy shows up and gets directly in my face and accuses me of being on his property, and being in his house," Doe said. "He was extremely naked." The ordeal escalated quickly, with Omondi striking Jackson and then pursuing Doe. An autopsy report attributed Jackson’s death to blunt force injuries to the head and neck, and the affray also left Doe injured. The witness accounts match surveillance video evidence, according to court documents.
In the aftermath of this brutal killing, the daughter of the slain man is torn between a desire for forgiveness and feelings of anger. "He took somebody that I'll never be able to call or see again," De Leon lamented, "I want my dad to get the justice he deserves because he went out in a very bad way." Meanwhile, Doe expressed his opinion on Omondi's punishment, advocating for the harshest penalty: "I would like to see the death penalty," he said, "This man has shown that he doesn't deserve the rest of his life, based on his actions", as cited by WFAA.
