A Fort Worth man's New Year's celebration took a dangerous turn when a stray bullet struck him in the leg at the stroke of midnight. Federico Perez was outside his home welcoming the year 2024 with family and friends when he was injured by the unexpected gunfire. Perez recounted the chaotic moment, saying that about eight people, which included children, were present during the incident on Hanna Avenue, according to NBC DFW.
Fort Worth Police were called to the scene amid reports of a stray bullet wounding Perez. While standing near his carport, after counting down the final minute of 2023 and beginning to appreciate the celebratory gunfire, he was startled to realize he was bleeding from his leg. Celebratory gunshots, a hazardous tradition observed by some during such festivities, led to 55 calls to police that night, as reported by East Texas Radio.
As detectives continue to unravel whether the bullet that hit Perez was indeed stray, and where it may have originated from, Perez himself was left to deal with the aftermath of the incident. Now recuperating at home with a bandaged leg and a crutch, the family's joyous entry into the new year was marred by this senseless violence.
