In Fremont, residents were briefly advised to take cover indoors following a hazardous materials incident, confirmed local authorities yesterday. The shelter-in-place order went into effect at approximately 11:45 a.m.. It was prompted by a leak at the Arctic Glacier Premium Ice facility, as reported by the Fremont Police Department in a Facebook post.
Officials specified the impacted area as north of South Grimmer Boulevard, east of Grimmer Boulevard, south of Automall Parkway, and west of Fremont Boulevard. According to aerial footage from NBC Bay Area's SkyRanger, emergency personnel in hazmat suits could be readying to fix the issue. NBC Bay Area captured images of white smoke emerging from the facility during the ordeal.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after 1 p.m. with Fremont Police updating the community via an online alert through Nixle. The update indicated a resolution to the situation without any injuries reported, a reassurance to Fremont residents.
The emergency response, which included the Fremont Fire Department, brought traffic to a temporary standstill, disrupting the normal flow around the hazardous area. "Please Shelter in place until 1:00pm due to possible hazardous incident," the Fremont Police urged earlier in a statement, underscoring the potential threat posed by the leaked substance. By the early afternoon, traffic flow was restored to normal following the lifting of the order.
The Fremont Police Department has not released further details on the cause of the leak or the specific substances involved at this time.
