A woman was killed on a dark Forsyth County roadway Monday night after she was struck by a vehicle. According to Atlanta News First, Melissa Browne, 44, of Gainesville, was fatally hit by a minivan on Keith Bridge Road near Freedom Parkway around 8:30 p.m.
Officials reported that a 57-year-old Cumming man was driving the Dodge Caravan westbound when he hit Browne. She was attempting to cross to a QuikTrip from a Waffle House and Ingles parking lot. The area was poorly lit, save for some ambient lighting, and Browne was wearing dark clothing at the time. The driver of the minivan is reported to have stopped immediately to assist, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said.
FOX 5 Atlanta identified the victim, initially described as an unidentified middle-aged woman, revealing Browne's identity two days following the accident. The scene, as described by the authorities, paints a picture of a preventable tragedy that underscores the dangers of poorly illuminated pedestrian paths.
As of now, no charges have been filed against the driver, and the incident remains under active investigation. Browne was pronounced dead at the scene, and according to officials, there currently seems to be no indication of any wrongdoing by the driver who cooperated fully with law enforcement.
