In a move that stirs both anticipation and bittersweet feelings among college football fans, Georgia Bulldogs star tight end Brock Bowers has officially declared for the NFL Draft. The announcement, made via Bowers' Instagram, marks the end for a college career that saw the Dawgs' player accumulate impressive stats even in the face of adversity, as Atlanta News First reported. Over the 2023 season, Bowers managed to snag 56 receptions for 714 yards and six touchdowns, despite an ankle injury that sidelined him for a significant part of the campaign.
"It has been an unbelievable honor and privilege to play for this university," Bowers stated, reflecting on his time with the team. His performance, especially in his earlier seasons, contributed to back-to-back national championship victories for the Bulldogs. The injury, which hampered his junior year and kept him out of the Dawgs’ 63-3 rout of Florida State in the Orange Bowl, was a setback for an athlete twice awarded the John Mackey Award, which recognizes the nation’s top tight end.
Despite the challenges, Bowers' legacy at Georgia is firmly cemented. "His legacy is he’s a tremendous athlete, great toughness, never seen a kid come back from a significant injury like that that fast," Georgia coach Kirby Smart told The Athletic. Smart hailed Bowers for his work ethic, which has left an enduring mark on the program. His continued commitment and rapid recovery post-injury exemplified the resilience and dedication that coaches and fans admire.
Looking forward, the Bulldogs are gearing up to fill the void Bowers' departure will leave. Sophomore Oscar Delp has been tapped as the potential successor. Delp's physical prowess and recent mental growth in the role are promising, according to tight ends coach Todd Hartley from an interview with The Athletic. "He’s had to take on that role — somebody mentioned tight end No. 1 earlier — he’s had to do that. I’ve seen some really good things out of Oscar, really proud of where he’s at," Hartley explained. The team also anticipates contributions from other scholarship tight ends and a couple of high-profile recruits who have joined the program early and are already drawing positive attention.
As the NFL Draft approaches, predictions place Bowers in a strong position to be one of the first skill position players selected, possibly in the high first-round picks. His collegiate triumphs, though now behind him, set a powerful precedent for the Bulldogs' tight ends stepping up to fill his cleats – a challenging but exciting prospect for the Georgia faithful.
