The probe into Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis ratcheted up a notch as the Georgia Senate voted in favor of creating a special committee to sift through allegations of misconduct and a purported romantic fling between Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade. In a decision that didn't require the governor's signature, the Senate, by a margin of 30-19, decided to form a panel with the power to subpoena and scrutinize the pair's actions amidst the 2020 election interference case involving former President Donald Trump, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
Records dredged up during Wade's divorce proceedings alleged he bought plane tickets for Willis and funded other excursions though the court documents seen by 11Alive didn't conclusively tie these to any romantic dalliance. The panel, a mix of six Republicans and three Democrats, is to function without the typical checks as it lacks the mandate to dole out direct sanctions versus Willis but could spark legal or fiscal reforms post-investigation.
While the resolution sailed through the Senate, the opposition was not shy about decrying it as a partisan maneuver aimed at scoring points with Trump loyalists, "You’re talking about partisan politics. That’s all you’re talking about," Democratic Sen. David Lucas blasted according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Opponents remain wary, indicating the allegations may stem more from the discontent of an ex-wife rather than solid evidence, Sen. Lucas notably adding, "All we've heard is allegations and most of it comes from an ex-wife who is mad."
The legislative scuffle is just the tip of the iceberg with a Cobb County judge readying a January 31 hearing for Wade's divorce and Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee charting a February 15 hearing on a motion to dismiss the indictment against Trump and his associates due to the alleged misconduct, 11Alive relayed; meanwhile, on another front, Rep. Charlice Byrd has gone as far as to file for Willis' impeachment in the House. Amidst the friction, Willis defended her actions at an Atlanta church, dismissing the scrutiny as unfair and laced with racism, underscoring a relentless pursuit in a job she's embarked on for three decades.
