Over the weekend, Georgia State University's calm was shattered when bullets from what appeared to be "random gunfire" struck and damaged three dorm windows at University Commons. The incident, reported to have occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday, has raised concerns among students and staff, although GSU President M. Brian Blake assured there was no ongoing threat to campus. "The shots appeared to have originated from the highway, and there was no ongoing threat to campus so an emergency notification was not prompted," Blake revealed in remarks cited by WSBTV.
No injuries were reported, but the recent gunfire adds to a series of violent incidents in the vicinity of the GSU campus. To urgently begin to tackle this surge in violence, Blake said that the university has invested millions in improvements to enhance campus safety. According to WSBTV, Blake stated, "There is no ongoing threat, but at the end of the day, this is simply an unacceptable incident and we are committed to keeping you informed and updated."
In a letter sent out to school families, which was also referenced by FOX 5 Atlanta, President Blake outlined measures taken by the university following the incident, including partnering with the Atlanta Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, and Georgia Department of Transportation to review camera footage as the investigation continues. University Housing and Student Victim Assistance have swung into action to support the impacted students, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary help and guidance during this time.
The string of violent occurrences in GSU's surroundings has not gone unnoticed. December witnessed the fatal shooting of one person and the injuring of another on GSU's campus, while in November, a woman was killed and three others sustained injuries in a shooting incident. Reflecting on GSU's central location, Blake identified it as one of the university's greatest assets yet simultaneously a culprit for heightened safety challenges, as reported by WSBTV. The administration's resolve to address these challenges remains unwavering in light of the recent events.
