
After a prolonged investigation, Chicago law enforcement has finally netted a suspect in the murder case that rattled a local community more than three years ago. Angel Avelar, a 22-year-old from Glendale Heights has been charged with the first-degree murder of a 57-year-old man, a crime that dates back to December 2020. The arrest, according to the Chicago Police Department, was the result of coordinated efforts between the CPD and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Authorities apprehended Avelar near his residence on the 1100 block of S. Cedar St. on January 4, 2024, after he was identified as one of the shooters in a fatal incident. Fleeing the crime scene on the 2300 block of S. Wood St., the victim, who was 57 at the time, succumbed to gunfire at approximately 3:11 a.m. Avelar, now in custody, is expected to be tried as an adult despite his youthful age at the time of the alleged murder.
