Firefighters in Lawrence, Massachusetts staged a daring rescue Friday, as a raging house fire on Salem Street left residents fighting for their lives. The blaze ripped through a three-story home, initially trapping someone on the third floor and sending thick plumes of smoke into the cold afternoon sky, reported by NBC Boston.
Upon their arrival before 3 p.m., fire crews found the building enveloped in flames and as they entered, became disoriented due to dense smoke, forcing a ladder rescue for the stranded resident, Lawrence Fire Chief Brian Moriarty revealed the rescue was fraught with challenges including the intense fire, freezing temperatures, and powerful winds blocking exits which made it harder to see and difficult to find pathways through the smoke-choked hallways; Moriarty's account to NBC Boston detailed the compounding difficulties faced by firefighters. Two other individuals also required hospitalization for minor injuries sustained during the incident.
