As New Year's Eve approaches, law enforcement in Houston is not pulling any punches when it comes to drunk driving. The Harris County Sheriff's Office and other local agencies are gearing up for a 'No Refusal DWI Initiative', which means that come this weekend, drivers suspected of being under the influence won't have the option to refuse a blood alcohol test. Harris County holds a notorious record for DUI-related fatalities, and this year, authorities are more determined than ever to bring those numbers down, KHOU reported.
With an unsettling lead in the nation for DWI-related deaths, the local law enforcement is taking a stand. According to stats shared by Houston's police chief Troy Finner, there's been over 5,100 DWI arrests in the city in 2023. His counterpart in the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Ed Gonzalez, added that their department has made 1,500 DWI arrests themselves. These figures highlight the persistence of the problem in the region, and as officials have emphasized, each arrest is a potential tragedy averted. "There will be zero tolerance for impaired driving," Sheriff Gonzalez stated, as ABC 13 mentioned.
