Houston hit-and-run victim Waswa Sula, 38, has tragically succumbed to his injuries weeks after the incident at 3500 Hillcroft Avenue on January 2. Previously hospitalized then released, he was found unresponsive later and officially pronounced dead, according to the Houston Police Department's report.
The driver, identified as Gabriel Mejia Cor, 25, did not stop to render aid after hitting Sula, who was crossing the road away from a crosswalk. Police later found both Mejia Cor and his silver Toyota Corolla, leading to his arrest on charges related to the failure to stop and render aid, as per the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division, detailed in a statement.
At the scene, found breathing and conscious, paramedics quickly transported Mr. Sula to the hospital. The HPD reports that he was later discharged on January 7. Despite this seeming recovery, Sula's condition took a dire turn, leading to his unfortunate passing on January 13.
Sergeant D. Rose and Officer J. Bibb were the investigating officers from the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division who pieced together this tragic event and have been leading the ensuing investigation. Mejia Cor, captured after fleeing, was subsequently processed and taken to the Harris County Jail as he awaits his fate in the 184th State District Court.
