A year-old homicide case has taken a major step forward with the arrest of a suspect accused in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Houston.
Authorities have charged Raishard Jamal Potts, 23, with the murder of Terrance Lewis, a case stemming from an incident that occurred on June 15, 2022, at an apartment complex on Tierwester Street. According to a release by the Houston Police Department, Lewis was found dead from a gunshot wound in an entryway to one of the apartments.
The shooting reportedly happened at around 3:30 pm, when Lewis was returning to a friend's apartment after disposing of trash. Lewis and his friend were known to work for a non-profit organization focused on feeding the homeless in Houston. The details of the event suggested no immediate motive for the killing.
Sergeant W. Dunn and M. Hughey of an HPD Homicide Division conducted the investigation which led to the recent development. While Potts had been in Harris County Jail on unrelated charges, new evidence surfaced implicating him in Lewis's death. "Subsequent investigation identified Potts, who is in the Harris County Jail on an unrelated charge, as the suspect in this case. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was consulted and, on January 19, a murder charge was filed," the Houston Police Department's news release stated.
Potts now facing a murder charge before the 208th State District Court.
