Breastfeeding mothers in Fort Bend County, Texas, now have a dedicated spot to donate their milk to babies in need. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has inaugurated the area's first breast milk depot, providing a vital service to the most vulnerable infants. According to FOX 26 Houston, the new depot addresses the increasing demand for donor milk, particularly for preemies and babies with special dietary needs or allergies.

The donor site, created in collaboration with Mother's Milk Bank Austin, allows mothers to donate surplus breast milk, which is then meticulously tested and pasteurized. The burgeoning need for donor milk has been particularly felt since 2022, after a series of formula recalls exacerbated an already critical formula shortage, causing ripples of concern among parents nationwide. Theresa Walters, NICU manager at Houston Methodist Childbirth Center at Sugar Land, emphasized the essential role of breast milk, stating, "It really is lifesaving for the most premature babies." New mother Precious Okoh echoes this sentiment, recounting to FOX 26 Houston how donated breast milk was pivotal in her premature baby's growth, saying, "She has doubled her birth weight."

In a report by Houston Chronicle, the process for donors involves a free screening, which includes a phone interview and blood work — there is no cap on the amount a mother can donate. Nurse and new mom Hailey Stanford made a noteworthy first contribution to the center, filling the refrigerator with 1,740 ounces of her pumped milk. Stanford underscored the critical need for donations, saying, "It’s really needed. There’s a shortage right now."
