In a year marked by aggressive patrol policies and data-driven strategies, the Illinois State Police (ISP) has reported a notable downswing in both traffic fatalities and expressway shootings for 2023. Governor JB Pritzker heralded the results, emphasizing that the ISP effectively utilized data to overcome a rising tide of violence and accidents on the state's roadways, as detailed in a press release from the agency.
According to the ISP announcement, interstate shootings plummeted by 32% compared to the previous year, while fatal crashes on interstates fell by 7%. These improvements appear in the wake of ISP's push for a nimble approach that pivots towards, emerging threats, countering habitual or outdated enforcement patterns.
ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly stressed the significance of adapting to the data-derived command structure, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the ISP's efforts. "As an agency, we’ve become more nimble, and focused on data, making decisions based on where the greatest threats to public safety emerge, rather than following the same old pattern or habits," Kelly said, as cited in the press release. "Challenges remain, but we are headed in a good direction."
Apart from the decrease in shootings, and crashes the ISP also increased its enforcement outcomes. Arrest numbers saw a slight uptick of 3% with 6,543 bookings made in 2023. Patrol troopers reported that gun confiscations surged by 12% and vehicle recoveries went up by 7%. Moreover, the same strategies led to the seizure of over $4.5 million in suspected criminal funds and more than 10,000 pounds of illegal drugs during the prior year.
The governor lauded these efforts, stating that "ISP saw a growing problem in Illinois, and used data and first-hand expertise to efficiently address problems, and achieved results—the absolute model of what state government can and should do for its citizens." This holistic strategy not only nabbed more offenders but also removed significant quantities of weapons, and contraband off the streets, indicating a steadfast commitment to public safety. The success exhibited by the ISP in 2023 demonstrates a model for blending traditional police work with modern approaches, altogether aiming for safer roads and communities across Illinois.
