An inmate at Fulton County Jail was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in his cell, local authorities reported. Michael Anthony Holland, 36, was discovered during a routine security check early Wednesday morning by a detention officer, WSB-TV reported. Jail staff attempted life-saving measures before Holland was transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
Holland had been in custody since May 4, 2023, facing charges including aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer and willful obstruction of officers by threats or violence. His bond was set at $55,000, the Atlanta News First revealed. The circumstances surrounding Holland's unresponsiveness remain unclear, and an investigation into his death has been initiated by the Atlanta Police Department.
According to statements from the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will not be involved in this case. Instead, the local Atlanta authorities will lead the inquiry into Holland's death. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office is slated to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The incident at the Fulton County Jail raises concerns amidst a backdrop of scrutiny over inmate deaths. In 2023, 10 individuals died while in custody at this facility, prompting the U.S. Department of Justice to open a civil investigation into the jail's conditions, including use of force, and structural safety issues, per Atlanta News First's report. The outcome of the investigation and the recently reported death could bring forward changes at the beleaguered jail.
