The brutal car accident that took the lives of a Georgia family on a two-lane Texas highway has now connected two nations in mourning. The family, hailing from Andhra Pradesh in India, was repatriated back to their homeland, fulfilling a tragic journey sparked by a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 67 last week. Texas DPS reported that the crash involved a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, which was being driven by 17-year-old Luke Resecker and had 17-year-old Preston Glass as a passenger, and a 2021 Honda Odyssey carrying the deceased, according to FOX 4 News.
The head-on crash resulted in the deaths of Nageswararao Ponnada, 64, his wife Sitamahalakhmi Ponnada, 60, their daughter Naveena, her two children Kruthik, 10, and Nishidha, 9, and the family's cousin Rushil Barri, 28. Lokesh Potabathula, 43, was the sole survivor of the Odyssey, now battling critical injuries in the hospital. Nageshwar Rao, younger brother to Mummidivaram MLA’s father, and his family's remains landed in their hometown Tuesday morning and were laid at home for the community to pay their respects before being taken for funeral rites in Rajamahendravaram, as indicated by Deccan Herald.
Ashok Kolla of the Telugu Association of North America was instrumental in facilitating the transport of the remains to India. "We transported them yesterday morning," Kolla said. The Potabathula family, who recently relocated from Plano to Alpharetta, Georgia, was in North Texas for the holiday break when the incident occurred. Barri, who had come to the United States for graduate school, had been living in Irving and working hard to fulfill his dreams. His return to India comes after four years of absence, a return no one envisioned would be under such harrowing circumstances, as per FOX 4 News.
As the communities on both sides of the globe reel from the shock, Lokesh Potabathula remains hospitalized, unaware of his family's fate. The Telugu Association is in touch with Potabathula's sisters in India—one of whom is planning to travel to the U.S. to assist in his recovery. "It's a tragedy," Kolla remarked, in a gross understatement of the sorrow that envelops both the local and international communities. Meanwhile, the two teenagers responsible for the tragic accident remain in critical condition and no charges have been filed as the investigation continues, per FOX 4 News.
