It was an electrifying night at the State Farm Arena as Jalen Johnson took the reins, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 139-132 overtime victory against a Joel Embiid-less Philadelphia 76ers. Atlanta News First reported Johnson's critical plays, including two clutch free throws in overtime and a decisive 3-pointer with only 39 seconds left on the clock. The forward racked up 25 points and 16 rebounds, putting on a show for the home fans.
While the Hawks have stumbled through the season with a less than impressive 15-21 record, Johnson's performance suggested a glimmer of hope for the struggling squad. Sans their ace center, the Sixers couldn't keep pace, bogged down by their third consecutive defeat as Atlanta News First emphasized. With the 76ers playing without Embiid, the Hawks seized the opportunity to snap a two-game losing streak and notch their first win against Philadelphia in three attempts this season.
Trae Young and Dejounte Murray also made significant contributions with 28 and 25 points respectively, further intensifying the Hawks' edge. As reported by USA Today, Sixers' Tyrese Maxey, despite fouling out in overtime, had a standout performance with 35 points and a near triple-double, while Tobias Harris added 32 points.
Both squads were operating without their starting centers, and Paul Reed stepped in for Embiid who missed his second game due to knee issues—he was reported working on the court back in Philadelphia as the Sixers hoped he would be in action against Sacramento on Friday. Meanwhile, Atlanta tapped Onyeka Okongwu for the center position as Clint Capela sat out with an Achilles tendon issue. Okongwu evidently relished the increased responsibility, scoring 11 of Atlanta's first 18 points.
The Hawks are bracing for a five-game stretch on their home turf, aiming to turn the tide on a so-far disappointing home record, which stood at 6-9 before Wednesday's matchup. Johnson, reflecting on the victory, underscored the importance of defending home court, as per his comments to USA Today. The Hawks will undoubtedly hope this win marks a turning point in their season as they claw their way back to a respectable standing in the league.
