A massive boon to the local workforce, heavy equipment colossus JCB has announced it will build a 720,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant on the South Side of San Antonio, promising to bring 1,500 jobs within the next five years; the news is described as "the largest single jobs investment in over two decades" for the area, with an estimated $30 billion economic impact lined up for the coming decade.
Known globally for its construction and agricultural machinery, JCB's bold move into San Antonio marks its largest facility in the US, where it already employs 1,000 people, the company eyes this expansion as a strategic play to tap into North America's robust construction equipment market, JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald emphasized Texas' vibrant economy, central location, and strong transportation links as pivotal reasons for the factory's location, while JCB North America President & CEO Richard Fox-Marrs hailed the economic growth and increasing demand that make this expansion ideal for the company.
Details from zoning applications, obtained by San Antonio Report, show that the British construction giant is laying down roots close to Toyota's plant and Texas A&M University-San Antonio campus, cementing its presence at 13610 State Highway 16 South on what is currently 400 acres of mostly vacant land, except for two homes dating back to the 20th century.
With the blessing of city officials, JCB's move won’t just create jobs but has also been met with open arms in the form of tax incentives; Bexar County is offering a 100% tax abatement for 10 years, plus a $5 million reimbursable grant for public infrastructure, Mayor Ron Nirenberg also mentioned that the city will extend economic incentives based on performance, per statements in the San Antonio Report.
Established in the UK and now celebrating nearly 80 years in business, JCB operates in multiple countries, including India, Brazil, and China, the San Antonio plant will act as a major hub for supplying its North American market, diversifying its global manufacturing footprint, the company plans to kickstart the construction of the facility early next year, according to its announcement.
