A man was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot multiple times near I-35 and Walzem Road on San Antonio's East Side Tuesday afternoon, and several people were seen fleeing the scene. The shooting happened around 1:50 p.m. near the intersection of Walzem Road and Midcrown Drive.
According to WOAI, the San Antonio Police Department reported that several people were seen fleeing the scene after the man was shot. As of the station's report, suspects had not been located, and the circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear.
A Corridor With a Violent History
Tuesday's shooting is not the first incident of gun violence along the Walzem Road corridor this year. In April, a shooting in the 5000 block of Walzem Road left one victim critically injured before the suspect turned himself in to San Antonio police, according to the City of Windcrest Police Department, a case Hoodline covered in its report on the April shooting.
The intersection of Walzem Road and Midcrown Drive has seen repeated violence over the years. In August 2018, a triple shooting at an apartment complex in the 8000 block of Midcrown Drive left one man dead and two teenagers critically injured while the suspects fled, as reported at the time by MySA. More recently, in December 2021, a fatal shooting was reported at a Northeast Side apartment complex, according to KSAT.
Citywide Violence Is Down, But Questions Remain Local
Tuesday's shooting comes even as San Antonio has posted significant citywide drops in violent crime. A University of Texas at San Antonio evaluation published in July found that violent street crime incidents fell 21.1% in 2025 compared to 2024 following the rollout of data-driven hot spot policing strategies, per UT San Antonio. Citywide, aggravated assaults dropped 19.8%, homicides fell 18.5%, and robberies decreased 17% in 2025, according to crime data evaluated by UTSA criminologists and detailed by the San Antonio Report.
Homicides kept falling into 2026, dropping an additional 8% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2025 and putting the city's homicide rate 12% below pre-pandemic levels, the outlet's report notes. The local picture remains more complicated.
Legal Exposure for the Uncaptured Shooter
Under Texas Penal Code § 22.02, shooting a person with a firearm constitutes aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony carrying penalties of two to 20 years in state prison and fines up to $10,000, according to Flatiron Legal Advisors. The report did not identify charges in connection with Tuesday's incident.
Tuesday's shooting is a recent San Antonio gun violence case involving people who fled the scene, and earlier this month a driver chased down the gunman who shot him three times on the city's North Side.
