The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is set to elevate its aesthetics with a new art installation that hangs from the ceiling of Terminal 1. Los Angeles-based artist Kipp Kobayashi has been tasked to bring to life an intricate 45-foot-wide sculpture, titled "The Dreams We Carry," which is planned to be suspended in the Concourse G Rotunda, near the gates where travelers often pause, waiting to board or debark from their flights. According to a design reveal covered by FOX9, the piece will be meticulously crafted using see-through wire mesh in the shape of luggage bags, cradling items inside.

This creative endeavor is more than just a feast for the eyes, it aims to deeply resonate with voyagers. "Our cherished possessions reveal profound aspects of our identity, symbols of experiences, relationships, and significant moments in our lives," Kipp Kobayashi explained in a statement obtained by CBS News Minnesota. The concept is to encapsulate the myriad personal stories that converge at this bustling travel hub. MAC has handed Kobayashi a commission budgeted to not over exceed the $600,000 mark, anchoring his creation as the final touch to the airport's recent expansion that saw an addition of 50,000 square feet of public space.

Indeed, this sophisticated piece is designed to do more than simply catch your eye; it's crafted to spark reflection and connection to the human experiences so often intertwined with travel. Brian Ryks, the CEO of the MAC, emphasized in a statement covered by FOX9 the importance of such installations, saying, "Providing travelers with exceptional airport experiences is a top priority for us," and expressed eagerness for the artwork to serve as a welcoming beacon inspiring those traversing through the space. "The Dreams We Carry," once completed, will come to join around 80 other artworks in the airport, all brought together under the Arts@MSP program, a collaboration between MAC and the Airport Foundation MSP.

As travelers continue briskly to walk the Terminal 1 concourses throughout 2024, they can anticipate the emergence of Kobayashi's sculpture. Certainly not a rush job, the artist will spend the year carefully crafting the piece for an early 2025 unveiling. The installation promises to add another layer of intrigue to MSP Airport, which already boasts a suite of amenities that includes new retailers, restaurants, and the Delta Sky Club unveiled last year. With each detail from the transparent luggage to the items held within, Kobayashi's work is poised to encapsulate the airport as a crossroads of countless journeys and the ephemeral dreams carried along with those on the move.
