
A late night single-vehicle crash has left an 18-year-old New Bedford male dead and a 44-year-old Dartmouth woman seriously injured. The Dartmouth Police and other emergency responders rushed to the scene on Gulf Road at Smith Neck Road after reports of a car accident with ejections reached them around 10:35 p.m. on Friday.
Upon their arrival, the responders found two individuals, Jacob Pothier and Kathleen Martins, unresponsive in the road next to a wrecked 2022 Honda Accord, the police said in a statement in their official facebook page. Both victims were immediately given medical attention at the site of the crash before being transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, Pothier tragically did not survive and was pronounced dead, while Martins sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently in guarded condition.
The grim outcome of the crash has sparked a comprehensive investigation by the Dartmouth Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit, with the collaboration of Massachusetts State Police and Dartmouth Police Department detectives. The investigators are examining all aspects of the crash to determine its cause, which, as of now, has not been publicly disclosed.
The aftermath of the incident has left the local community in shock as they mourn the loss of the young life and hope for the recovery of Martins, and the Dartmouth Police Department is asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward, the details surrounding the incident are still piecing together and authorities are urging witnesses or those with relevant information to help in providing clarity for this tragic event.
