A tragic twist of fate claimed the life of a 58-year-old Livermore man Tuesday afternoon as he cycled through a quiet neighborhood. The Livermore Police Department responded to a distressing scene near Encino Drive and Laguna Street after receiving reports of a bicyclist down.
According to an official statement from the Livermore Police, obtainable through their Facebook page, a good Samaritan discovered the man and attempted CPR prior to the arrival of emergency services. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders to perform life-saving procedures, the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary probe into the incident, bolstered by neighborhood video footage, indicates that the cyclist, who did take the precaution of wearing a helmet, may have been thwarted by an unforeseen mechanical breakdown. This failure reportedly catapulted him over the handlebars, resulting to a fatal impact against the unyielding concrete below.
Authorities have ruled out the involvement of any vehicles and have stated that speed was not a contributing factor in the fatality. The identity of the deceased will be disclosed by the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau pending the notification of his next of kin.
