A Lockhart High School senior's life was tragically cut short this week in a head-on collision. Yairette Tovar, 18, was killed while driving to school on Tuesday morning, according to FOX San Antonio. The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. on the 9600 block of FM 20. As per reports, Tovar was on the wrong side of the road when she collided with another vehicle. She died at the scene.
Described as joyous and eager to experience her upcoming prom and graduation, the teenager's death has left her family grappling with heartache. "She never came back from school," her older sister Brisette Tovar said in an interview with FOX San Antonio. Bridgette Tovar, Yairette's younger sister, expressed guilt over not accompanying Tovar on the day of the crash, as she usually did, because of an argument they had. "I could’ve been with her, I could’ve helped her," she lamented.
The local school district has been quick to respond, with Lockhart ISD deploying a crisis intervention team to support the community. In a statement shared by Yahoo News, the district expressed its condolences, urging the community to hold Tovar-Pineda's family in their hearts and prayers. Additionally, friends and family have started a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses for Tovar-Pineda, who had just celebrated her 18th birthday in December.
The effect of Yairette's untimely death on her family is catastrophic, with each member trying to cope with the loss. Bridgette shared the harrowing experience of identifying her sister's body, recollecting how their father fell to his knees upon confirmation. "To say that my sister is dead, like telling people Yairette died, it doesn't feel real," Bridgette also said, as reported by FOX San Antonio. The incident remains a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the suddenness with which it can be taken away.
